Here’s a little bit about us:

A Place to Meet God

The Newman House has a Blessed Sacrament Chapel where you can stop in to pray 24 hours a day. There is nothing more powerful than the presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. Placing ourselves in our Lord’s presence is a welcome rest from busy college life. In the Chapel, there are a variety of books and resources about the Catholic faith and prayer. Masses and various devotions are also celebrated throughout the semester.

A Place to Meet People

What is college without friends? Finding a place to meet people is important. The John Newman Association (JNA) is a group of students who gather to socialize, pray, and do service projects. The JNA has a variety of events throughout the week. We’re a Catholic Christian organization; however, our students come from all faiths and walks of life!

Fun Stuff

During the year, many social events take place at the Newman House. The JNA hosts bowling, whitewater rafting, an annual semi-formal dance, hiking, game nights, mini-golf, ice skating, laser tagging, karaoke, and day trips to Hershey Park, New York City, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Philadelphia. See Semester Events Calendar for a list of our events for the semester!

Service Opportunities

The JNA organizes a variety of service opportunities. Our students practice service outreach in the local community by working with charities and performing service projects:

Be The One: One Saturday every month we do a community service project—working at a soup kitchen, an AIDS hospice, a women’s shelter and many other opportunities.

Regular Weekly Events at the Newman House

Monday Soup & Scripture

Join us at noon for an informal scripture reflection and lunch prepared by Fr. Steve (or Sandy or John Herr’s). Our gathering lasts less than an hour so you can come and still make it to your 1:00 class! Feel free to come late or leave early and bring friends!

Tuesday Nights with the Saints

This semester - Fall 2008 - we will learn about the life of a Catholic Saint.  There will be a video followed by discussion.  We will meet twice a month on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 PM in the Newman house.

September 2nd and 16th

October 14th and 28th

November 11th and 25th

At 9 PM we will close with Night Prayer in the Newman House Blessed Sacrament chapel. Night prayer is part of the Church’s Liturgy of the Hours, a peaceful, brief moment with Jesus to end the day.

Wednesday Night Dinner

We begin the evening with the Sacrifice of the Holy Mass at 4:20pm in the Newman House Chapel, followed by a home-cooked meal at 5:00 at the Newman House. Come to one or both. All are welcome- bring friends!

Friday Holy Mass & Lunch

Each Friday there is a noon Mass at the Newman House Chapel. Receive Christ in this great sacrament and unwind from a busy week. Lunch follows Mass and we’re done in plenty of time for you to get to your 1:00 class!

The Spiritual Side of Newman

Sunday Mass on Campus: Masses are celebrated at 11:00am and 6:00pm on the 2nd floor of Wesley Hall—located two blocks south of the Newman House at 121 N. George Street (next to the A-frame church).

Weekday Masses: Daily Mass is offered on Mondays at 11am, Wednesday and Thursdays at 4:20pm, Friday at 12 noon, and Saturday at 8:30am - all at the Newman House. There is NO daily Mass on Tuesdays.

Holy Days of Obligation: During the semester, two Masses are offered on Holy Days of Obligation. Ordinarily these Masses are celebrated in Wesley Hall at 12:05noon and 6:00pm.

Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation): If you have been baptized as a Roman Catholic but have never been confirmed or received Holy Communion, or if you are of another faith and would like to learn more about the Catholic Church, contact Fr. Steve.

Sacrament of Reconciliation: On Sundays at Wesley Hall, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered before both Masses—10:15-10:45am and 5:15-5:45pm. Appointments can also be made, just contact Fr. Steve.

Eucharistic Adoration: Throughout the semester, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is offered. It is a powerful time to be in the presence of Christ and take some time to pray.
